22: About Comfort
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow
of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me, Thy
rod and Thy staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23: 4 NASB).
I had often read Psalm 23 but never really understood it
until I visited Israel and saw the rugged terrain traversed
by David and the shepherds. Many of the crevices on the rocky
hills are so narrow and deep that the sun never shines all
the way to the bottom. It remains a shadow. Certain death
would result if anyone should fall in, because rescue would
be virtually impossible. David’s staff helped him walk
with sure footing and the rod defended him from wild animals.
Most of all, he became acutely aware of God’s provision.
Through the valley times in our lives, we, too, can be sure
that we are not alone. His presence is real. Jesus will still
be there through all the pain and the changes in our life
situations. Nothing is more comforting.
